![]() ![]() GOOD THING 3: Free T6 C-Store Ships Once a Year If you start into STO and wonder what your first Tier 6 ship should be, the answer may be, “Wait until December/February/July, you’ll get a free account-unlocked ship then for doing a daily for about 20 days.” Almost all of those ships were endgame-capable ships the only one that isn’t easily endgame-ready is the Kobayashi Maru/Tong’Duj, but even TimberWolf found a way to do it. Starting with STO’s 2nd Anniversary and not letting up since, we’ve had 2-4 new free ships each year for 8 years now (2 freebies in 2012, 3 in 2013-2018, 4 in 2019, expected 4 in 2020). The second year had a Winter event where there was a chance to get a Jem’Hadar Attack Ship, then the best Escort (if not best overall ship) in the game. One thing STO’s always had going for it is free ships each year by doing a fairly simple Event 3 times a year and, lately, putting a bit more effort into an additional Event for a 4th ship. GOOD THING 2: 3 Square Meals a Day…I mean, Free Ships a Year Just don’t plan on being the absolute best for free keep your expectations in check. Hopping in and playing all the story content and doing “dungeons” is free. ![]() Get as involved or stay as casual as you want. You can play to the level cap (and then some), make a number of alternative characters, buy stuff from the player Exchange (without real cash all transactions are in-game easily earnable currency called Energy Credits), and even convert your earned Dilithium into the premium Zen currency (used in the C-Store) for free! STO pays for itself through a Lifetime “Subscription” (LTS), cash shop (C-Store, Z-Store, or Zen Store) releases, and RNG-based reward systems like Lockboxes and Promo Boxes (you buy Master Keys for the Lockboxes and the Promo Boxes themselves with no keys needed). Unlike games like World of Warcraft, you don’t pay for new mission (quest) and TFO (dungeon/raid) content. If you somehow didn’t now, Star Trek Online is a Free-to-Play MMO. GOOD THING 1: Mission Content, “Don’t Cost a Thing.” And there are things in STO that aren’t making things better on us.īut we’re not without some positivity, and I think it’ll show we’re not totally screwed. Yes, I know, 2020 has been a miserable year for many of us for a variety of reasons. Just because I play the game doesn’t mean I kiss Cryptic’s feet.) (I’ll say what I like and say what I don’t like. I’ve done a Twitter thread about 2020’s ship releases so far. There’s also been concern of Cryptic stepping up the release of $100+ ships/Bundles while offering few traditional C-Store offerings (I’ll define “traditional” in the next blog along with proving what I mean). There’s been quite a lot of controversy surrounding the release of STO’s next ship, the Inquiry-class Battlecruiser. (My goodness, it’s been a year already?!) The Summer Event has ended and I’ve been doing Borg Red Alerts and Patrols to get my Legendary Starships’ account-wide traits unlocked for a possible series marking the 1-year anniversary of the blog. My apologies for the lack of posts lately. ![]()
